Round 6 - Goodwood, Saturday 28th April
Only three intrepid competitors braved the fasted venue on our calendar (come on guys, it’s an amazing track and if you save up all your pocket money you might even be able to afford one of the Duke’s bacon butties), Hank in his 2500, Blower Richard in his supercharged Chimaera (detuned this year to just under 400bhp) and Alan Hugh in his 4.3 Griffith. Fortunately there were lots of Classic Marques pals to chat to.
Despite forecasts threatening all sorts of winter-like weather, the day was dry but cold, so no need for the sun hats from Gurston the previous week, but practice was on a track with unknown amounts for damp patches, so we all did the sensible thing and took it gently. Not so gently that AHD caught a Plus 8 Morgan at the end of the second lap and proceeded to nearly fall off by not paying attention.
As is normal at Goodwood, the first timed runs were before lunch and while the three of us all made improvements, some were more dramatic than others with Hank taking a full 16 seconds off his practice time, while Blower took 9 and AHD only 1.5.
Second runs after lunch again showed improvements for Hank of another 3 seconds and AHD of 0.5, but Blower’s lunch of a sausage baguette caused him to go a tenth slower.
All too soon the last runs were upon us and this time only Hank showed us how to do it with another half a second off and a new class record into the bargain, AHD had clearly peaked and lost a few tenths while Blower made a mess of the last corner and failed to record a time.
At the end of the day, as expected by some, AHD took away the 25 points with Richard just keeping ahead the ever improving Hank for second with his own new PB. |
