Round 5 - Aintree, Saturday 27th April
Aintree, the Home of Grand Prix, Horse Racing, Golf & Ducks!
Five intrepid competitors took on the challenge of Aintree sprint course on a typical Saturday in April: i.e. damp! |
They were Mark and Nathan Warburton in a Griff 4.3, Dave Welton in his Tasmin 5 litre, John Carter in his normal V8S 5 litre & Bill Campion in the S2. |
So first practice and start was delayed when a single seater went off at a right angle on the straight! Two ducks took the opportunity to cross the track to get a better viewing point. After tiptoeing round to see how grippy/slippy it was the five had a little time to dry off before heading out for another slightly wetter run/practice.
Now more acclimatised to the conditions all went quicker, with Nathan slightly quicker than dad Mark. First timed run and raining again, but everyone went quicker. The weather seemed better when we had a break for lunch which gave the marshals a well-earned break. |
At the restart the weather returned and topped up the puddles, so the second run completed and everyone went quicker! Mark was not happy with Nathan because he was still quicker. So onto the third run with the weather even worse because now the wind had joined in, but everyone went quicker! After applying algorithms it ended up with GetCarter a gnat's whisker in front of Bill followed by Nathan, Mark then Dave.
They then said there was going to be a fourth run, so everyone wanted to do a fun run!!! The weather was now even worse and |
guess what, everyone went quicker even though it didn’t count.
The strange thing is the wetter it got the quicker everyone went. Ducks are better in water so maybe there’s a little bit of duck in us all!!! Finally we must thank the marshals who did a wonderful job in horrendous conditions. John “GetCarter” Carter |
